The Children's Set a Good Example Campaign

Frustrated parents, conservative groups and educators have been calling for a new approach to moral education. One that gives children grounding in what William Bennett, former US Secretary of Education, describes as "those values all Americans share. As any parent knows teaching values is a difficult task," he said in a speech to the National Press Club. "But it is a crucial task because we want all our children to be not only healthy, happy and successful, but decent, strong and good."
Against a background of repeated failure for values clarification, drug education, sex education and other moral programs, results found by the Beckman and Associates Study of the "Set A Good Example" School Contests over a period of five years are highly impressive, especially given the relatively informal and voluntary participation of both teachers and students.
There can be no question the program does get the kind of results we so desperately need. Moreover, these are the kind of results which the general public wants to see in our public schools.
"I like The Way to Happiness because it tells you not to be mean to each other. It tells you that if you hurt somebody else they will want to hurt you back. This is a very smart book."
