This Year's Gold Medal Winners
of the Set A Good Example Contests

Setting a Good Example...

Gold Medal winner Juan, who is just 14 years old, is a leader in the high school that he attends and no doubt will continue to be a leader in the community if he continues to excel as he has done on his project.

He was presented his Gold Medal along with his father, mother and his sister, Jennifer, who won a Bronze Award.

Juan has been awarded the United States National Scholar award because of academics in high school. He was also awarded the United States National Leadership award, for leadership involvement. He shared with us that he feels his highest achievement was his nomination to Who's Who Among American High School Students.

Juan is not only an excellent scholar, he is also an excellent musician, a tuba player who received the United States National Band Award. Even with countless hours of practice that produced recognition placements in region and state award bands, he still manages to find time to tutor younger children in his band and make a difference in their lives.

Juan has held leadership positions in his 4-H(1) club. As a team leader he protects the environment, has raised cattle and goats, participates in an adopt a highway program, and other 4-H activities. Summer camp in 4-H has inspired his humanitarian awareness and his resolve to strengthen 4-H for his county by participating as the district level officer. He has competed at the state level in Texas and has organized teams of competitors for state level competitions. Juan has received many special awards from 4-H— even the most prestigious Gold Star Award.

Last but not least is Juan's involvement with the American Lung Association. He has been a junior counselor at the summer asthma camp for four years. His compassion for his sister Jennifer's asthma, inspired him to help others with this problem.

In so setting a good example for others to follow, Juan is awarded the Gold Medal in the Set A Good Example Contest which follows the precepts of the book The Way to Happiness!

1. 4-H — a national youth organization in rural areas, with programs for young people in home economics, agriculture, community service and personal development. The four H's stand for the aim of improving head, heart, hands and health.

Next week you will hear more, and in detail, about the National Gold Medal winners this year.
