This Year's Gold Medal Winners
of the Set A Good Example Contests
In this series are the Gold Medal Winners of the Set A Good Example Contest as presented at the Awards Banquet held at ABLE International. These winners also receive a Moral Leadership Award certificate for applying the common sense moral guidelines for living as contained in The Way to Happiness book by L. Ron Hubbardto set good examples for their peers, families and community.
Introducing the children and their projects for their Gold Medals is Dr. Richard Palmquest.
"The children from Harlingen, Texas are wearing their Gold Medals. They are winners in the Harlingen citywide campaign sponsored by Dr. Juan Villarreal and other concerned businessmen. Dr. Villarreal spearheaded the Harlingen campaign approximately 12 years ago and other businesses decided to join him in sponsoring two years ago to create a citywide effort to promote The Way to Happiness and reduce the effects of violent crime in the country. This effort was successful and last year was the first year that Harlingen experienced zero violent crime and Cameron County experienced dramatic drops in all types of crime statistics. As a result of these statistics Mayor de la Garza has written Mayors in other cities encouraging them to participate in citywide Set A Good Example Contests in order to achieve similar results. We are about to begin a city-wide event in Inglewood California. The Mayor and the Inglewood Police Department are leading the effort there and I, Dr. Richard Palmquest, will be leading the sponsorship efforts.
"Due to the size and structure of a citywide event, the children submit their projects to the sponsoring office, are judged separately from the National Contestants and have separate banquets. In Harlingen the judging occurred and the students received their awards there.
"They are here, though, in Los Angeles with the National Winners to enjoy their first place prize consisting of a week long vacation in Southern California with their parents and a teacher of their choice. They will enjoy events at Knotts Berry Farm, Disneyland, Midevil Times, Ripley's Believe It or Not, and this awards banquet."
Next week you will hear in detail about the National Gold Medal winners along with the Harlingen Gold Medal winners.
