Perhaps you have noticed how small children are quick to try to help? Even when they are very small they want to be part of the family group and contribute to it. The urge to be part of the family, to help and contribute is very strong in each of us. Denied the right or deprived of the opportunity to help, children do not do as well in life. No one does.
The epilogue of The Way to Happiness® book reads: "Happiness lies in engaging in worthwhile activities." Children have an innate sense about this. Given the opportunity to contribute to worthwhile activities, we find they are quite happy doing so.
True, there are material awards and prizes in the Set A Good Example Contest that motivate, like winning a trip to Disneyland or one of the cash prizes awarded each year to winners of the National School Competition. But winning those is minor motivation. The real motivation is an opportunity to "Do your own thing, create your very own project that helps in some way and sets the example for others." Doing such a project allows youngsters to experience the happiness that follows contributing to worthwhile activities and the personal satisfaction that comes with being responsible, creative, industrious, competent and influential.
