Issue 2 Number 7

Barbara Ayash is the Cofounder of the Concerned Businessmen's Association of America, a nonprofit, nonpolitical, completely non-religious organization working with teachers in over 11,000 schools during the past sixteen years. She agrees with the US Secretary of Education that stated "Morals aren't hard to teach; we just have to teach them."

Parents, according to the National Agenda Foundation, want their children taught the same commonly accepted virtues and values taught at school that they are teaching them at home. When children learn different values at school, from their peers, television, movies and the media they are confused as to "which morals are right and which morals are wrong?"

The Wall Street Journal published results of a 1992 Gallop poll in which parents were asked to rank the relative importance of 25 educational goals. Their top answers were:

  • 86% - to develop the ability to speak and write correctly
  • 64% - to develop standards of what is "right" and what is "wrong"
  • 54% - to develop the skills to use mathematics in everyday problems
  • 52% - to encourage respect for law and order
The more recent poll conducted by the National Agenda Foundation found an even higher percentage of parents, 88%, ranking the teaching of "commonly accepted virtues" in schools higher than even reading and writing skills.

This is the objective of the CBAA's Set a Good Example Contest. The game where everybody wins!

"I think this book, The Way to Happiness, is a good book. Some things apply to me. Honor and help your parents is one that definitely applies to me. So does the chapter on saying the truth and also the chapter on not doing things to others that you would not like them to do to you. Using those sections of the book have helped my parents and I get along much better. We don't fight so much."
