The Children's "Set a GoodExample"
Campaign and School Programs
Why They Work
Every culture in every age has relied upon a moral code to promote positive, constructive conduct and discourage destructive harmful acts. Although much in these moral codes may not seem particularly harmful acts at the start of the beginning of the new millennium, when these codes were written they were entirely relevant. They helped perpetuate the family, the group and the nation. They provided means by which individuals upheld the basic tenets of honesty and mutual trust. In short, moral codes supplied the overriding principles by which men could live peaceably, prosper and live in harmony with one another.
But just as all ancient cultures required a moral code for their survival, so too does out own culture desperately need such a code, by which we may live and teach our children to live. Judging by modern crime rates (see contents bar on your left), divorce rates, substance abuse and falling confidence in government and public education, one could predict the seeds have been sown for serious social upheaval unless countered by an equally large effort to restore traditional values.
Mr. L. Ron Hubbard was keenly aware of this situation in 1980 when he observed that our modern world lacked a code of morals befitting our fast paced, high tech, crime ridden society. Old values had been broken but not replaced, and many people were left to flounder in this change. Moreover, the moral codes of ages past were religiously based and demanded faith that few could muster in this era of waning church attendance.
Mr. Hubbard always endeavored to bring solutions to the world from a purely humanitarian perspective. And in the instance of his writing The Way to Happiness book, he saw the need for a non-religious moral code based on simple common sense.
That moral code he wrote is The Way to Happiness. It is the first moral code based wholly on common sense, and the only one entirely non-religious in nature. It carries no other appeal than to the good sense of the individual man or woman, boy or girl who reads it.
CBAA's "Set A Good Example" Campaign and Student Contests are based on the idea that educating youth in common sense values and getting them to apply them in the process of developing and carrying out their own projects to help their peers and others, is a WORKABLE solution to preventing drug abuse, youth crime, delinquency, illiteracy and dropping out. While doing their projects they learn through practical experience that they can influence others by being positive examples. They learn that being honest, being worth of trust, learning to live with the truth, being competent and industrious and treating others the way one wants to be treated, pay off in happiness.
Teachers see results in better grades and more honesty in the classroom. Parents report closer family relationships. Students find that by contributing to their schools and community they develop a sense of personal achievement and pride.
The Children's "Set A Good Example" Campaign and School Programs work for all those reasons and that is why they are sponsored by private sector corporations, business owners, professionals, and individuals across the country who want to help change things for the better.
Here is How We are Winning...
A section dedicated to those who write in their successes from working with the CBAA and its programs. This weeks letter is from a Dentist who sent out both the Excalibur Newsletter and enclosed The Way to Happiness booklet inside and sent it out to his local neighborhood...

Re: Set A Good Example Campaign
Recently my dental staff and I did an "Excalibur Newsletter" mailing to several thousand residents in my immediate area. Included with the mailing was a paperback edition of The Way to Happiness book by L. Ron Hubbard. The entire project was a lot of fun to do, but mostly a very worthwhile program we could feel good about. Just think, what if everyone tried to set a good example? We'd have a lot saner worldless crime, ignorance, and general despair.
Setting a good example starts with each and every one of usit's a very personal decision. If I can, you can! I had a lot of very nice comments from persons who received the mailing. One lady even said "I think all kids should read this book and be in this program."
Of all the programs I've been involved in to assist mankind, this has got to be one of the best and most needed. I could highly recommend it to anyone.
Sincerely,
Charles Clements, DDS

From the President
National surveys show that students prefer listening to their peers instead of authority. The Children's Set A Good Example Campaign and Student Contests encourages students to set good examples for each other. In doing so they help themselves, their friends, their families, their schools and communities.
Here is an example:
While only a second grader, Lauren Bothwell recognized the need. She read a book entitled The Way To Happiness. She decided that she would do a project to Love and Help Children. She decided to organize a school wide toy drive at her elementary school. After three weeks she had collected over 1000 toys. She motivated her fellow students and they helped her do this. They brought new and used videos, books and stuffed animals. Laura encouraged them to write Get Well notes to go with each toy. Next she itemized every item; then took them all to the Ronald McDonald House, the children's ward of local hospitals, and the Family Emergency Assistance Center. Asked why she did all this, her answer was, "These will help keep up their spirits and they will get well faster." Finally she baked cookies to award classmates that helped with her 1st Set A Good Example Contest Project.
What motivated this very young child to do something that helped so many is a book written by author L. Ron Hubbard entitled The Way To Happiness which she received in a Children's Set A Good Example Contest enrollment package.
Contestants are required to have their parents permission to enter the contest. After reading the book with their parents. Lauren and her mother discussed the book and Lauren decided that she had to forget about this being part of a contest and keep her heart in the right place. As a result she won and so did 1008 other children because she cared what was happening to them. She attributes the success of the program to the classmates who helped her do it. I am sure you will agree Lauren is a winner in all respects.
I interviewed her parents yesterday; they told me that when it was over Lauren asked her father if he thought we would cancel the prizes she won as a contestant of the Children's Set A Good Example Student Contest and let her use the money to help other little children get well.
We hope to interest you in supporting this program and activities like Lauren's.
At CBAA we know the only way to create a better future for business is to create a better future for youth. Our concern is for their moral integrity and the moral integrity of the nation they will soon inherit.
